Category:Geography of JamaicaFrom Jamaica WikiJamaica is an island, 235 kilometers long and 32-85 kilometers wide, located within the Caribbean Sea. It lies south of Cuba and west of Haiti. The island has an area of almost 11,000 square kilometers that makes it slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut, USA and the largest island of the Commonwealth Caribbean. The climate of Jamaica varies. There are two types of climate found on the island – upland tropical climate and semiarid climate. The tropical climate prevails on the windward side of the mountains, while the semiarid climate is found on the leeward side of the mountains. Temperatures vary between 25 °C and 30 °C. The highest point of the island is the Blue Mountain Peak, 2.256m where the temperatures may dip to 10 °C. Jamaica receives rainfall throughout the year, and the heaviest rains are from May to October. The island receives northeast winds, knows as the "Doctor Breeze", as well as onshore breezes at night, know as the "Undertaker's Breeze". The island sometimes suffers from great storms and hurricanes, especially between July and September, because it lies in the Atlantic hurricane belt. The two most significant hurricanes hit the island are the Hurricane Charlie in 1951 and the Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.
