The official language of Jamaica is English. This is due to the long period of colonization by England.

Jamaican Creole, also know as patois language, is also widely spread and in fact it is more commonly spoken by Jamaican people. British English has a great influence over patois. However other languages, manly African have influence over the syntax and the words of patois. In general, patois differs from English in pronunciation, grammar, nominal orthography and syntax, having many intonations to indicate meaning and mood. The language's characteristics include pronouncing /θ/ as [t] and /ð/ as [d], and omitting some initial consonant sounds, principally /h/.
