There is a total of 324 bird species found in Jamaica. The endemic species are 28, 15 are the ones introduced by humans, 160 are rare or accidental. Twelve of the 324 bird species are globally threatened.

Grebes resemble ducks. They are water birds, well adapted to swin in the sea as well as to dive. Grebes prefer calm waters and they inhabit many places in the world. As seen here with the Least Grebe, grebes can resemble ducks when swimming.

Grebes are a species of bird that are well adapted for the sea and for diving. Grebes use their diving techniques when they are in danger. They are found in many parts of the world, mostly on calm and safe waters.

Storm – petrels are the smallest sea birds. They are relatives of the petrels. The Storm – Petrels eat small fish as well as planktonic crustaceans. Two of the overall twenty one species live in Jamaica.

Beautiful white birds that inhabit the tropical ocean, unique for their exceptionally long tail feathers. Two of the overall three Tropicbird species inhabit Jamaica.

Two of the world's eight Pelican species inhabit the island of Jamaica. These big water birds are unique for their pouch under the beak.

[edit] Boobies and Gannets

The Boobies and Gannets are large coastal birds. They eat fish and catch it by plunging and diving into the water. Three of the nine species known live in Jamaica.

Cormorant bird family comprises of many species. In general they are all coasta birds that eat fish. Most of the species have dark plumage, some species being black and white. Just a few are colourful. The Double-crested Cormorant and the Neotropic Cormorant are the two species that inhabit Jamaica.

Daters or the so called "Snake Birds" have long think necks. In fact their necks are the reason for the "Snake Bird" nickname darters have. The male Darters have black and dark brown plumage, while the females have paler. The Anhinga is the only Darter specie that lives in Jamaica.

Frigatebirds have the largest wingspan to body ration of all birds. They are large and inhabit the tropical oceans. Their colour is usually black or black and white. The male Frigatebirds have inflatable colored throat pouches. There is only one Frigatebird specie that occurs in Jamaica.

One of the nineteen stork species inhabit Jamaica – the Wood Stork. Storks are large birds with long necks and long legs. Most of the stork species are migratory.

[edit] Ibises and Spoonbills

Ibises and Spoonbills are birds from the Threskiornithidae bird family. Their long and broad wings make these birds excellent fliers and soarers.

Flamingos have just one specie that occurs in Jamaica – the Caribbean Flamingo. Flamingos are beautiful birds that are 3 to 5 feet high. They are filter-feed on shellfish and algae.

Twenty four of the overall 131 species worldwide occur in Jamaica. Ducks, Gees and Swans are all part of the Anatidae family.
