The school is run by Roman Catholic nuns. The Alpha Boys school has been established and was known for the discipline and the great musical education that the school has been providing. The schools band was founded back in 1892 and was one of the bands that had great influence when reggae was developed. Jamaica College is Jamaican school for boys only. It is located at 189 Old Hope Road, Kingston. The school is famous because f the good academic education its students receive as well as for the sport education the school provides. Many of the Jamaican famous people were students of the school – the former prime ministers of Jamaica, Michael Manley and Norman Manley. Moneague College One of the Jamaican teacher training colleges is the Moneague College. It is located in Moneague, Saint Ann. The school history dated back to 1891 when the Moneague Hotel was built. Later the building was used as a soldier's camp (during World War II). The college was created in 1956 by Dr Aubrey Phillips. There are new buildings nowadays however the original colonial building as well as the hostel still exits. The Priory School (Kingston) The Priory School in Kingston provides kindergarten and a primary school. The school also provides secondary education under the name Priory High. The Priory School was founded 1944 and its first name was "The Priory House". There was one building only that had been built in 1907 by the Governor of Jamaica Hugh Clarence Bourne. St. Catherine High School St. Catherine High School was found in 1948. Its original premises were in fact the buildings that now house the St. Catherine Primary School on White Church Street in Spanish Town. It was a Catholic high school and the idea of creating such school was of Reverend Father Matthew Ashe S.J. and Sister Mary Mercedes Doorley R.S.M. It was meant to provide education for those kids who were unable to enroll in the other schools in Spanish Town and Kingston. St. George's College Another secondary school in Jamaica is the St. George's College. It was established in 1850 by a group of Spanish Jesuits expelled from Colombia. The college is for boys only and it was known for its strict discipline. The students were though to respect and teamwork. The first years of the school were hard – noone new what will happen and if it will manage to survive and establish itself as a respectable institution. However the principal of the school manage to stabilize it and until today it is one of the best colleges in Jamaica. St. Jago High School The free school St. Jago de la Vega is nowadays known as St. Jago High School. It is located in Spanish Town and provides secondary education. The school was established in 1744 under the will of Colonel Peter Beckford, Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. It is one of the best schools in Jamaica providing high quality academic education. |
